Language

Sylvie has been surprising us recently with her language development. For months she's been able to talk about her feelings, like telling us she's scared or sad or happy. But it's always been pretty clear cut scenarios: a loud noise, she tells us "I scared," running through the house with a big grin on her face she tells us "I happy!" So nothing too complex, but still amazing, of course, given that a year ago she was barely speaking at all. But that complexity of emotion and language is just starting to express itself, and it's mind blowing! The other night she totally threw me for a loop during dinner, she was cranky, throwing things and just being generally difficult. I was starting to lose my patience when the following conversation took place:

Kacey: Sylvie, I think you might need a time-out. You are being so cranky right now!
Sylvie: (pouting) But I'm very tired too Mommy.

!!!! I was stunned. I asked her if she wanted to go lay down in her room for a few minutes and she said "yes" and got down from her chair and slowly walked over to her room, pouting the entire time. Of course as soon as she got into her room and saw all of her toys she immediately perked up and wanted to play. :)

The other area that's been surprising us is the way she's picking up on little slang and colloquialisms. Like the other night, when John was with her and decided to take her outside to play in the sand box.

John: Sylvie! Do you want to go outside and play?
Sylvie: (uninterested) Umm...I guess so.

I should add that I'm not totally convinced she completely understands what she's saying, because just a few seconds after she gave her less-than-enthusiastic response to John, she was waiting at the door with her shoes, jacket and purse, yelling "c'mon Daddy!!"

Tuesday Night is Guest Blogger Night: Back to the Grind

Back to work today, and since it's Tuesday, that also meant back to school for Sylvie and Kacey! Sylvie was so happy to see her friends and get back to her Tuesday morning routine. And today she made a beautiful polka dot butterfly. We thought this would be a good opportunity to show off her little art gallery of school projects, aka our front door. Here she is picking out the spot for her latest masterpiece:

Making sure it's securely on there:

Quite an impressive gallery, eh?

Travel fatigue

I can't even remember the name of this hotel. I do remember being woken up every half hour or so by a little toddler size 7 foot in my face, or elbow in my back. Gotta love sleeping with a 2 year old. And what's with this cartoon on the TV? I have no idea what that is, but it kept her occupied long enough for us to brush our teeth and pack up our bags for the last 4 hours of our trip home. Which coincided with a torrential downpour. The entire time!

Ahhh, home sweet home! We all slept well Monday night.

Cousins

Mary and Tony hosted an open house all day Saturday, which was a great chance to just unwind and hang out with everyone, recapping stories from the night before. Sylvie particularly enjoyed rough housing with her cousins, and a little snuggling too! Here she is with Skylar and Erika:

THE WEDDING

And it's official! Aunt Amanda is now a Burns. Whoo hoo! The wedding was beautiful, exciting, and so much fun. I am going to leave the pictures for the professionals, who have already put up some incredible snaps on their blog. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I am dying to see the rest of the photos. What a gorgeous sneak peak!! And of course I'm super anxious to see pics of my adorable little flower girl. :)

In the meantime, here's a perfect capture of Sylvie's attitude that whole night. The girl had a BLAST.

Congratulations Amanda and Patrick! We love you!!!!

Wedding Rehearsal

Today was Amanda and Pat's wedding rehearsal and dinner. It was so much fun! The rehearsal itself was exciting and we all got to practice our roles, including Sylvie and Brianna, who practiced holding hands and walking together. Much cuteness all around. Later we met up with all of the out-of-towners for dinner on a beautiful lake near Amanda and Pat's house. The food was delicious and the party was so much fun. I love the atmosphere of rehearsal dinners, just so much excitement in the air, with family and friend reunions, the relaxing vibes and good food and music. The kids running around and everyone just generally kicking back. It was a fantastic party! Here are some shots from the evening:

John walks Amanda down the aisle, note the ribbon bouquet she's holding, which was made at one of her bridal showers!

Being very careful on the steps:

Later at the lake, Sylvie is reunited with Collin and McKaylea. She was SO HAPPY to see them and play. They were adorable together.

I think it was right around the time I snapped this picture that I heard Sylvie shout "Let's go guys!" and then take off running, with Mac and Collin in hot pursuit. They chased each other around like this all evening, until the sun went down.

After dinner, Amanda presented Pat with a groom's cake in the shape of a grocery shopping cart filled with his favorite foods (Pat is a manager at a local grocery store). The cake was a huge hit, and those foods were actually rice krispie treats covered with icing.

Love the tin cans!!!

One of the only pics taken of me and the baby. Too bad Sylvie is blurry!

In the car

Wednesday morning meant more driving. And it was a pretty good drive for the first couple of hours. Sylvie ate a little, drank a bunch of juice, and had her choice of DVDs to watch:

Here she is enjoying a particularly funny scene from Dumbo:

And then suddenly, just less than an hour from Mimi's house, Sylvie started getting cranky and within seconds was puking. Everywhere. She was very upset and scared and kept vomiting, and since we were on a very dangerous part of the highway with no shoulder we couldn't pull over. We had to drive a mile to the next exit, where we were able to get her out and clean her (and the car) up. We ended up spending about 45 minutes on the side of the road, just to make sure she was okay. She was fine as soon as we got her out, and all she wanted to do was run around and play. Here I am on the phone with Amanda, talking about lots of pressing wedding details while trying to clean vomit out of Sylvie's hair.

And here she is feeling much better and admiring a flower she picked.

More sand box...

The box is now filled with a proper amount of sand from Lowe's. I had NO idea so much sand would be required...there is literally 1100 lbs of sand in her little 4x4 box. Sylvie got home with Kacey from work tonight and immediately made her way into the sand box. Before she arrived, though, I buried her little toy bugs in the sand so she would have a good time finding all ten of them.

Best Dad Ever

John told me he wanted to relax today, to take it easy before our trip to North Carolina for Amanda's wedding. Sylvie and I had a bunch of errands to run before the trip, so John decided to run to Home Depot to take a look at wood for a future sand box project. A big tree was removed from our yard before we moved in last year and in its place is a huge dirt mound. I'm sure I've posted pics of Sylvie digging in this dirt mound on the Daily Syl before. She loves it, and gets so much joy from it. And we've been pretty okay with her playing in it as much as she wants, but lately we've been realizing just how dirty it is, you know, playing and digging in a mound of dirt and all. Her clothes have been so filthy and her nightly baths are no match for the dirt and grime under her fingernails. We had one of those aha! parenting moments when we realized there's a reason you never hear of people having "dirt boxes" in their yards. So we decided that our spring project would be to build a sand box for Sylvie.

John's scouting trip to Home Depot turned into a full blown back breaking day of sand box labor. And like all home improvement projects, he did run into a few dead ends. For starters, let me be the first to suggest that anyone wanting to dig a plot of land for a sand box NOT try to accomplish that digging where a big tree once stood. Because trees? Have big huge stumps and crazy roots under the dirt, even if you can't see them. John started digging and realized this pretty quickly. He thought he could try hacking up the roots and stump, but quickly decided to switch locations. This meant digging up a second 4ft square in our already small yard. And this also meant that our main goal of covering up the big dirt mound would go unmet. But that's where I came in and offered a solution - we would carefully dig up the dirt and grass from the second plot and salvage it, creating our own sod pieces to cover up the former dirt mound. And by god, it worked! This is why John and I are such a solid team, people!

Here he is after digging up the second plot. The sand box frame is 12 inches deep, so he wanted to dig a hole at least 8-10 inches into the ground.

The sand box frame is in place, and he has lined the bottom with landscaping fabric, to allow water to seep through but keep the dirt out!

John's sweet inscription, which has since been covered with sand.

Filling the sand box with bags of play sand. (22 50lb bags to be exact!)

Sylvie wakes up from her nap to find her new sand box. Her first words were "I build a castle?"

Here she is playing, although at this point it's only half way filled with sand. We had to make a couple of car trips to buy it all, since we needed so much.

We also still need to sand the edges down, make some triangle seats for the corners, and make a cover out of lattice (to keep cats and other animals out, but allow rain in, as per Bob Villa. Thanks, Bob!) Also this picture was taken before John filled in the gaps around the edges with dirt. He also wants to plant some viny shrubs around the edges to fill it in a little better. It's a work in progress, but Sylvie is pleased as punch. What a great dad.

We can't wait to have some friends over to play!!

What a day!

AND we're back! I know, I know...we've got some catching up to do. but it's been a busy week and a half!

Friday was great. Brandon and Nicole had off school so Kacey and Syl were outside most of the morning and afternoon playing in the sun. Sylvie built sandcastles, rode her bike, played hide-and-go-seek, and even went to the park to have a picnic. Later on that night when I got home from a grueling 1h 45m commute, we went to Nicole's softball game. Not only was it a super exciting game (Nicole's performance on the mound got written up in the local newspaper -- yes, even at 10 years-old, these games are taken very seriously), but as an added bonus for Sylvie, she met a bunch of new friends on the awesome jungle gym. She shared an order of cheese fries with her parents. Then back to the jungle gym for some more bangin' around.

Yet despite all of these amazing photo ops, the camera was forgotten at home all day. Not wanting to disappoint, we managed to snap this pic right before bedtime.

Yes. That's right. It's Sylvie putting a Sargento's Mozzarella cheese stick into a Yuengling lager bottle. Yippee.

Making castles

Now that the weather is officially BEAUTIFUL around these parts, Sylvie and I are spending as much time outside as possible. I think somewhere along the way Nicole taught Sylvie how to make a sand castle, and making castles is now a part of our daily routine. She has an orange shovel and a yellow one, and each day a very important decision is made about which one will be used.

Today she went with orange!

She usually fills the bucket half way with this sandy dirt mixture, at which point she dumps the whole thing out on her legs, her feet, my feet, whatever is closest and in most need of getting filthy. Thanks Syl!

She'll usually dig her hands in the dirt and sand and search for treasures: acorn tops, old buried rocks, or the jackpot of all discoveries, live bugs! She gets so excited and loves to watch them scurry through the sand back to a safe hiding spot. She's pretty gentle so far and hasn't seemed to figure out that she can actually pick them up and do stuff with them, like you know, freak her mother out. Thank heavens for small blessings.
