35.75 inches

Well, yesterday's birthday post is going to be a hard act to follow that's for sure! We had such a great day together, and Sylvie really enjoyed having John home for the day when he normally would have been at work. We both missed him today! We didn't have much time to mope though, because Sylvie had her 2 year check-up early this morning.

We saw our favorite doctor in the practice, and Sylvie did great! She's as healthy as can be and is growing like a weed. She measured exactly 30.0 pounds (75-90th percentile) and 35.75 inches (90th percentile). The doctor asked me all the typical questions:

Dr: Is she walking well, does she run?
Kacey: Yes! Well actually, skipping is her preferred mode of transportation.

Dr: Does she say at least 25 words?
Kacey: She never shuts up!!

Dr: Can she walk up and down stairs unassisted?
Kacey: This is something I've been working on with her for months, since we don't have any stairs at our apartment. She's been getting progressively better, but I think truly mastered this skill when she routinely snuck off upstairs with her 4 year old cousin during our Christmas holiday. I guess he showed her the ropes!

Dr: Is she still sleeping in a crib?
Kacey: Oh yeah, totally, thankfully, long live the crib!

And then he turned my world upside down...

Dr: Oh, well she's over 35 inches! She's outgrown the crib, it's no longer safe. You need to take her out of the crib, now.
Kacey: But, what? Really? Are you sure? Can we talk about this? She's not a climber! She loves the crib! I LOVE THE CRIB!
Dr: Sorry, you gotta take her out, now. Tonight. Period. It's really not safe at her height.

I pressed him a little more, but he made it clear that there is no room for negotiation here. He explained that he doesn't want her first climbing experience to land her in the hospital for a CAT scan. I contemplated driving right to Babies R Us after the appointment to buy a toddler bed, but figured I could wait until the weekend to really figure this out. I am not too happy about this though, that's for sure!

Golly..........I don't see anything wrong with her still being in the crib. My kids were in the crib till they were around 3
None of them ever fell out. When they learned how to climb out they were smart enough to hold on until their feet hit the floor. I think each child is different, and the parents usually know when it's time for a change.

I was really hoping to keep her in the crib till she was around 3, and I'm not exactly rushing around to figure out a solution immediately. But I do feel a little weird about totally going against the doc's advice on this one. He's normally a very laid back, totally non-alarmist doc, so for him to be so insistent, I have to wonder if he's seen a couple of bad injuries from crib falls in his career.

ok...now I’m scared!!!!. I had no idea she would have outgrown the crib. Chloe has her appt. on the 28th I am curious to see how much she weighs and if I get the same advice. I really wanted her to be in the crib as long as I could. But I understand your concern when your Dr. says she’s to big…. Let me know how the transition goes.

just read this online on a sffety site:

*When your child reaches a height of 32 to 35 inches (usually about two years of age), he should no longer sleep in a crib, because it may no longer hold him. Your toddler could outgrow a crib due to his size or activity level well before reaching this height, so pay attention to his physical abilities and look for signs that he may be learning to escape. For instance, if he can pull herself up off the crib floor by grabbing the crib sides or if he can climb up the sides, he is too big and strong for a crib. When this occurs, he should then begin sleeping in a toddler bed.
